Two BSU Talkin’ Broncos Named National
All-Americans
Two members of Boise State’s
intercollegiate debate and speech have been named to the Pi Kappa
Delta national honorary All-American team. In addition, the Boise
State team finished second at the 2007 Pi Kappa Delta National
Forensics Tournament at Central Michigan University in Mount
Pleasant, Mich., March 7-10. The runner-up finish marks the fifth
consecutive time the Talkin’ Broncos have finished in the top five
at the biennial national tournament; they went into the tournament
as the defending champions.
Senior Katy Jibben, a communication
education major from Boise, and senior Wayne Rysavy,
a communication major from Ramstein, Germany, were among 10
undergraduates from across the United States honored as
All-Americans at the Pi Kappa Delta national convention.
All-American selections are based on excellence in debate and speech
competition, academic achievement and volunteer service. Jibben is
captain of Boise State’s individual events team and Rysavy is
captain of Boise State’s debate team. Both were named to the
Northwest Forensic Conference’s 2006-07 All-Conference team earlier
this year. They are Boise State’s fifth and sixth All-Americans,
joining Jaime (Thompson) Bott (1999), Ken Rock (2003), Lacey
Rammell-O’Brien (2005) and Nancy Henke (2005) as recipients of the
award.
At the national tournament, Boise State won 22
individual awards and advanced three debate teams to the tournament
semi-finals, but could not defend the national championship they won
in 2005. Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) edged the Broncos to
claim the national championship, a title SBU has held for 18 of the
past 26 years. Truman State University (Mo.) finished third, Webster
University of St. Louis placed fourth, West Chester University
(Penn.) was fifth and host Central Michigan was sixth in the field
of 60 colleges and universities from 27 states.
The national tournament recognizes outstanding
performances with “Superior” awards, presented to the top 10 percent
of competitors in an event, and “Excellent” awards, given to those
in the next 20 percent. Earning Superior awards for Boise State were
Ben Bishop (sophomore, Boise) in Informative
Speaking, Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle) in
Impromptu Speaking, Katy Jibben (senior, Boise) in
Informative Speaking, and Sean Watson (senior,
Kimberly) in Extemporaneous Speaking. Excellent awards went to
Jibben in Persuasive Speaking, Speech to Entertain
and Poetry Interpretation; Watson in Persuasive
Speaking, Speech to Entertain, and Rhetorical Criticism;
Chad Judy (junior, Idaho Falls) in Impromptu Speaking,
Extemporaneous Speaking and in the special commemorative event,
Speeches in Honor of Native Americans; Tyler Leatham
(freshman, Pocatello) in Informative Speaking and Extemporaneous
Speaking; Jackson in Informative Speaking;
Regan Charlton (freshman, Inkom) in Broadcast Journalism;
Wayne Rysavy in Impromptu Speaking; and
Travis Walker (freshman, Idaho Falls) in Broadcast
Journalism.
Two Boise State teams appeared in national final rounds
of debate and received Superior awards. In the open division of
Parliamentary Debate, Jackson & Judy finished
second on a 2-1 decision to Carson-Newman University (Tenn.). In the
novice division of Parliamentary Debate, Jibben and Watson
were second on a 2-1 decision to Cameron University (Okla.). Boise
State’s Ernest Dunlap (freshman, Kuna) and
Evan Meriwether (freshman, Boise) lost a 2-1 decision to
University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in the junior division semifinal
round and finished third.
In the Legislative Debate division, Watson
was honored as one of four Outstanding Legislators and received a
Superior Award. Jackson and Judy
both received Excellent awards.
Boise State received three team Superior awards, one in
Individual Events sweepstakes, in which they placed fourth overall,
one in Debate Sweepstakes, in which they placed second overall, and
one for Overall Sweepstakes.
The Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament is the oldest
collegiate debate and speech tournament in existence. Held every two
years since1917, it is the largest comprehensive forensics
tournament held in the United States. Boise State has had eight
top-10 finishes at the national tournament since becoming a Pi Kappa
Delta member institution in 1971. In addition to this year’s
runner-up finish, the Talkin’ Broncos placed 10th in 1975, sixth in
1993, third in 1995, fourth in 1999, fifth in 2001, third in 2003
and first in 2005.

Six Talkin' Broncos Named to All-Conference
Team
Six
members of the Boise State University debate and speech team were named to
the 2006-2007 Division I All-Northwest Forensics Conference Team, announced
this week. This is especially impressive considering the team attended only
one of the three sanctioned tournaments, choosing instead to travel to
tournaments outside the NFC.
Overall, Boise State earned the second-highest
score in a single tournament, with 191.12. Awards are based on the number of
points students earn in competition at NFC tournaments. The top 10 percent
of all competitors in a division are named to the All-Conference first team
and the next 10 percent are named to the All-Conference second team.
All-Conference Talkin’ Broncos are:
• NFC Division I First Team: Katy Jibben (senior, Boise) and
Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle).
• NFC Division I Second Team: Regan Charlton (freshman,
Inkom), Chad Judy (junior, Idaho Falls), Wayne Rysavy
(senior, Ramstein, Germany) and Sean Watson (sophomore,
Kimberly)
A new award category this year was the Mythical
Final Round, which names the top students representing the best in open
division events in the region. Final Round honorees included: Jibben,
platform speaking (memorized) and persuasive speaking; Judy, oral
interpretation; Jackson, impromptu speaking; Rysavy and
Watson, communication analysis; and Charlton, informative
speaking.
In addition, both Jibben and Jackson
earned honorable mention in the best open division competitors category.

winning the Clackamas College Invitational Tournament in Portland, Ore.,
last weekend. The Talkin’ Broncos scored 16 first- and second-place finishes
in the tournament’s 12 events to secure the win, despite competing with only
half the team present. The other half of the Boise State team will travel to
the Webster University Invitational in St. Louis this weekend, a strategy
designed to prepare the team for competition at the Pi Kappa Delta National
Tournament in March.
The Talkin’ Broncos open division debate teams rolled through the tournament
undefeated. The team of Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle) and Chad
Judy (junior, Idaho Falls) and the team of Kate Henry (freshman,

Watson was also Boise State’s top scorer in individual speaking
events, winning both novice Extemporaneous Speaking and Speech to Entertain,
finishing second in both Rhetorical Analysis and novice Persuasive Speaking
and placing fourth in novice Impromptu Speaking. Team co-captain Jackson
won two events, open Extemporaneous Speaking and open Impromptu Speaking,
and recorded second-place finishes in both Informative Speaking and Poetry
Interpretation. Park, the Talkin’ Broncos’ other co-captain, won both
Informative Speaking and Rhetorical Analysis, placed second in Persuasive
Speaking and finished third in Speech to Entertain. Judy won Program

Boise State finished with 126.2 team points to outpace second-place Mt. Hood
College (Ore.) with 110.7 points, and Clark College (Wash.) with 96.8
points. Boise State has not lost a tournament since February 2005, a streak
that includes the 2005 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and last year’s
Great West Regional Tournament.
After next week’s Webster University tournament, the Boise State team will
reunite and travel to Corvallis, Ore., for the Feb. 8-12 Earl Wells Memorial
