"Speaking for the the Department of Communication,  I would like to thank all of the companies  and their supervisors who have provided quality, hands on training for our students.  We have had  excellent participation from many businesses and non-profits in our area and hope to continue these partnerships and add new ones well into the future."
Do you represent a small business, a large corporation, or a non-profit organization that would like to take advantage of the internship program? If your answer is yes, please click on this link to a guide for describing the internship(s) you are offering to our students  Internship Opportunity Description Form
A few weeks before the end of the semester, you will receive a letter from me asking you to fill out an Internship/Cooperative Education Evaluation Form.  I rely heavily on your opinion of your interns to give them a grade for the experience.  A sample of the Evaluation form can be accessed by following this link Internship Evaluation Form.
Thank you for your continued support of the Department of Communication Internship Program.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rick Moore, Department Chair

As an Internship Provider the following guidelines will assist you in determining what the intern must
do to receive credit for the duties performed and the table of contents is a list of internships now available through the department.

Table of Contents of Internship Opportunities

Guidelines for the Successful Student Intern
Internship APPLICATION  ONLINE at:  http://career.boisestate.edu

Above the blue box on the right  Click On:   Internship Application for Academic Credit

1.

Identify the internship for which you intend to apply. For your convenience there is a table of contents of Communication Department Internships on the website at http://comm.boisestate.edu. You may intern with the company you are presently employed with or you can seek an internship through the Career Center’s Bronco Jobs at http://career.boisestate.edu. Ideally the internship will mimic your chosen field of study.

2.

Meet with your internship supervisor (The person who supervises you at work for the internship) to determine the scope of your duties and the number of credits you expect to receive for your internship.
1 credit = 50 hours of work (see Credits below)

3.

Seek approval from Dr. Rick Moore (The Internship Coordinator) in person before you start your Communication Internship OR, after you fill out the online application and submit it an electronic message is sent to Dr. Moore. He is able to read your application and mark it approved or not approved. You will receive notice of his approval and will then be able to complete the application process.

4.

Print the online application by selecting the printer icon in the right column (the printed application will have signature lines at the bottom). After you have printed your application make sure you have selected the SUBMIT button.  This process does NOT register you for academic credit.

5.

Have your internship supervisor sign (The person who supervises you at your internship workplace) and date the application (Bottom line on the application).

6.

You must sign and date your application.

7.

Take the application to Dr. Moore for his final approval and signature. It is strongly advised that you read the Internship information provided by the Career Center on their website at http://career.boisestate.edu

8.

You take the application to Room 110 of the Administration Building where it will be input and registered for credit. You will be able to check your application information on BroncoWeb. The deadline for registering for a Spring 2008 Internship is Monday, March 3, 2008. It is the same as the last day to drop classes or completely withdraw, add a challenge course, or practicum. See the home page of BroncoWeb for important dates to remember. http://broncoweb.boisestate.edu

9.

Check your Bronco Web E-Mail account regularly. Dr. Moore will use it to contact you concerning how your internship is progressing. At this point you will provide Dr. Moore with a brief summary of your experience to date. If you are having difficulties you think he can help you overcome, now—if not before—is the time to let him know.

11.

Maintain a journal of your internship activities. You should have regular log entries, at least one to two per week. In these entries, discuss the duties you have been assigned, your reaction to the experience, learning "moments" and frustrations that you may be experiencing. The goal of the journal is for you to be reflective of the internship experience and to provide some self-assessment of the internship itself. Use this information to write your Summary Report.

12.

Dr. Moore will send a letter and Evaluation form to your internship supervisor a few weeks before the end of the semester. Your supervisor will complete the form, indicating whether you should receive a passing or failing grade, and will return it to Dr. Moore by the due date of Friday, May 9, 2008.

13.

You will write a 2 to 4 page, double-spaced report and submit it to Dr. Moore. This report should include the following:
·
A synthesis of the work accomplished for the internship. Please share what you did, the differences
that you made, the accomplishments you had, etc.

·
A description of problems encountered, if any, and how they were resolved, if they were. These
    reports will remain confidential
, so feel free to be honest and direct.

·
An evaluation of the experience. Would you recommend this particular internship to others? Did you
find the experience educationally viable? Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the internship
    experience.

14.

The DEADLINE for the Evaluation and the Report to be received by Dr. Moore is the last day of regular classes, prior to final exam week. Friday, May 9, 2008 by 5:00 pm.  If your supervisor needs another copy of the Evaluation Form please contact Chris Peterson in C100, call 426-3320, or email to cpeters@boisestate.edu

15.

You may submit a hard copy or an electronic copy of your report to Dr. Moore before the deadline.

16.

Failure to complete any part of these requirements can result in a failing grade for the internship.

17.

If there are any changes to your internship, please inform Dr. Moore or his assistant a.s.a.p.
·  Internship credits are only for the hours you work while the semester is in session.
·
To get credit for working at a job you already have you must be learning something new during
the semester in which you are enrolled for the internship. You might do this by asking your
supervisor for new responsibilities or projects.
·  A 3-credit internship requires 150 hours of work during the semester. This is roughly 10 hours per
week if you spread it out evenly.

The Communication Internship provides academic credit for on-the-job experience under the guidance of an operational supervisor who is a professional in the field.  Student interns are expected to perform the duties and meet the expectations of the professional role.

To enroll in COMM 293 (Freshmen/Sophomore) or COMM 493 (Junior/Senior), a student must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of 2.00 or higher. Additionally, most internship opportunities have specific professional preparation qualifications associated with them.

Credits:  No more than twelve internship credits may be used to meet university graduation requirements and no more than six of those credits may be used by communication majors to satisfy their specific degree requirements. Graduate level internships (COMM 590 Practicum/Internship) also are available.  See Dr. Moore for a Practicum permission number.

Questions, comments, suggestions or concerns will be met with an open mind and are always welcome.
